URL Encoder and Decoder — Encode a Query Value

Encode or decode one URL component with percent escapes, including spaces and Unicode text, in your browser.

Loading the tool… JavaScript is required for processing on your device. The instructions and examples below are available without JavaScript.

How to use it

Paste a query parameter value and choose encode or decode.

Good to know

Encoding is for a component, not an entire navigable URL. Malformed percent sequences produce an error.

Encode the value, not the whole address

Use this tool when a piece of text needs to go inside a query parameter or path component. For example, encoding Paris & Ada/✓ produces Paris%20%26%20Ada%2F%E2%9C%93. The escaped %26 prevents the ampersand from being read as the start of another query parameter.

To build a URL manually, keep its structure separate: https://example.com/search?q= plus the encoded search value. If the value is red shoes & socks, append red%20shoes%20%26%20socks, not an encoded version of the entire URL.

Decode copied parameter values

Choose Decode to turn a component such as red%20shoes%20%26%20socks back into readable text. Malformed percent escapes, such as %ZZ, cause an error rather than a partial result. A plus sign is left as a plus sign because this tool uses URL-component encoding, not HTML form decoding where + can mean a space.

Encoding makes reserved characters safe to transport; it does not make a link private or safe. Do not put passwords, access tokens, or sensitive personal data in URLs. Review the destination system’s requirements for a full URL, path segment, or form body. Text up to 100,000 characters stays in your browser.
