Hours Calculator — Shift Length Minus Breaks

Calculate elapsed hours and decimal hours between two times, with an unpaid break deducted and overnight shifts supported.

Loading the tool… JavaScript is required for processing on your device. The instructions and examples below are available without JavaScript.

How to use it

Enter a start and end time and any unpaid break to get hours worked.

Good to know

An end time earlier than the start time is treated as the next day (overnight shift).

Work out a shift total

Enter start time, end time, and an unpaid break in minutes. From 09:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break, the tool returns 8 hours 0 minutes, 8.00 decimal hours, and 480 total minutes. An end time earlier than the start is treated as the following day.

Confirm your recordkeeping rule

The tool measures elapsed clock time only. It does not track multiple breaks, rounding increments, time zones, overtime, paid breaks, leave, or payroll rules. Review the final decimal-hour convention required by your employer or timekeeping system before submitting a timesheet.

Frequently asked questions

How do I calculate hours worked?

Subtract the start time from the end time, then subtract unpaid breaks. 9:00 to 17:30 with a 30-minute break is 8 hours.

How do I convert minutes to decimal hours for payroll?

Divide minutes by 60. 8 hours 15 minutes is 8.25 hours. The result shows both formats.

Does it work for night shifts?

Yes. If the end time is earlier than the start, the shift is assumed to end the next day.
