SHA Hash Generator — SHA-256, SHA-384, SHA-512, and SHA-1
Calculate a selected SHA digest for pasted UTF-8 text using the browser Web Crypto API.

How to use it
Paste text, choose an algorithm, and generate the hexadecimal digest.
Good to know
Hashes are computed with your browser’s Web Crypto API. The text is encoded as UTF-8.
Verify a known text digest
Choose the algorithm used by the other system, then paste the text exactly. With SHA-256, hello world yields b94d27b9934d3e08a52e52d7da7dabfac484efe37a5380ee9088f7ace2efcde9. SHA-256 output has 64 hexadecimal characters; SHA-384 and SHA-512 are longer.
Hashing is not encryption
A digest cannot be used to recover the original message, and a matching digest is a comparison of hash values, not proof of authorship or authenticity. The tool encodes pasted text as UTF-8; it cannot check a file checksum because file bytes and text characters are not interchangeable. SHA-1 remains available for compatibility but should not be chosen for new security-sensitive designs.
Frequently asked questions
How long is a SHA-256 hash?
SHA-256 produces 256 bits, shown as 64 hexadecimal characters.
Is SHA-256 encryption?
No. It is a one-way hash. You cannot recover the text from the digest.
Can I hash a file?
This tool hashes text. For files, use a checksum tool that reads the file bytes.
